This week it is Erbs Palsy Awareness week.
Erbs Palsey is an avoidable birth injury caused by damage to the brachial plexus during childbirth. It results in weakness or paralysis of the shoulder, arm or hand. This is often the result of medical staff using excessive force on the babys shoulder during birth, and in some cases, it may have been avoided if procedures were followed.
Treatment involves physical therapy, with surgery needed in some cases for full recovery.
DJW Talent Company founder and director Daniel-John Williams is passionate about raising awareness due to his daughter being affected by the traumatic birth resulting in her also having Erbs Palsy.
Erbs Palsy affects approximately 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 live births. the condition is most commonly caused by complications during childbirth, such as shoulder dystocia.
